with the record warm temps today, i got to do some resin work in the winter! here is the new woodie. thin balsa deck with fiberglass bottom. 1# eps core (the shaped core weighed only 3/4 of a lb!) next step is to put on the wood rails.

a very unconventional surfboard made its way into the shop today. outline looks like a lopsided wakeboard and deck like had a pronounced s-shape. two fins on one side and one keel on the other. shaped by ryan burch for richard kenvin - two prominent surfers in the media these days. both incredible surfers with a knack for riding very different wave sliding devices. very cool!

Got some more blanks in yesterday, including this 'greenfoam' blank which is made of recycled foam. The extra foam shaved off a blank during shaping is captured and turned back into raw material to make a new blank. (http://www.greenfoamblanks.com/) I was going to glass this one with a pine based epoxy resin (http://www.entropyresins.com/). Maybe a bamboo or hemp cloth also? There are options out there if you want your surfboard to be more environmentally friendly. Give me a shout if you are interested.

Starting off the new year with a new wood board project. 5'8 quad egg with HEAVY single concave all the way through. It will have a thin balsa deck and rails but foam bottom. Hoping to get some bennnnnnnnd to this one.

Here is to a 2012 filled with fun waves and good buds on a favorite shred sled! Thank you to everyone who commissioned a shape from me last year - I had a lot of fun making you boards!

The conditions were perfect last night. Crystal clear autumn sky, full moon straight overhead at mid tide with offshore winds and a small groundswell. The inner werewolf was howling to get out. Grab the midnight blue single fin and hit the water. Doing a daytime activity in the light of the moon feels like stealing time that you are not supposed to have. The light gives off shadows as strong as day but familiar places are somehow unfamiliar and motion seems to drag like in a strange dream. Stoked on that solo session. GO SURF!

A Stoked Ride Report from PERU!

Thank you one more time for that badass board!! That board is the best surfboard and kiteboard I've ever ridden I rode it the entire time even on the one waist high day surfing. We got one medium swell that was decreasing right when we got there and then the big swell came in towards the end of our trip. For three days we got solid head, head and a half, and then one day we got occasional double overhead waves! That board held up great in the big waves I have minimal pressure dings even tho I was doing some airs kiting. One day I was riding at low tide and the wave sucked off the rock point break and I nailed my right fin on a dry rock and all it did was have a tiny spider ding no fix needed I was stoked! You defiantly have my vote in the best crossover board made. If you haven't visited Peru put it on the list its a crazy place and has great waves and wind. Thanks for the board I love it.

I dont have a pic of finished board but it was really similar to this one (which also went to Peru on the same trip):

stoked to have some kiters who know what they are doing (unlike me) to order these and put them through the paces.

Well Irene you totally surpassed the hype this evening with some of the biggest clean surf I have ever seen in SouthCarolina. The washout lived up to its name once again and washed over the dunes all over the road - take that beach re-nourishment! It was like a spectator sport today as ALL the crosswalks were stuffed with people whose cheers for valiant rides and bone crunching wipeouts could be heard in the lineup. Our prayers are with our friends and families in North Carolina tonight - BE SAFE!

I am living my big wave stoke through some bros who are charging serious waves in Central America on some boards that I built - I may not be charging but at least my boards are!

I did the unthinkable and possibly surfed chandlers last wave. I didn't think it was possible but I buckled him at outer reef pulling into the 2nd section barrel which went bone dry slamming the two of us into a dry slab of slate rock. Somehow I escaped relatively unscathed besides a solid hipper and minor abrasions, and i thought chandler would be ok too... until the set behind was even more monstrous and upon my scramble out if its grasp it slammed us again obliterating chandler into two and stripping glass all the way to the fins, making fixing it not really possible. I feel worse than Ive ever felt for breaking a board both because I was really getting a feel for those heavy footed bottom turns and sheer hellfire speed in the tube, and obviously for sending a special board of yours into boardie heaven. I'll be back soon now that im board less and broke needing to get back to real world .... hasta luegos muchacho. -siempunk

I have been in need for some major excitement so when my co-worker Jared asked me if I wanted to go skydiving with some of his friends I was totally in. We drove up to Walterborough to this stereotypical backwoods southern operation, complete with chained up rottweiler. Once you take the fork to the right on HWY 17 towards 'the borough' I think you immediately go back in time. Pretty awesome.

This plane was awesome. I think it was held together mostly with duct tape and skydive stickers. It sounded like a lawnmower engine and topped out at 80 mph.

My chute depolyed early and i got to parachute from 10,000 ft..........................

not feeling so hot after 100 rollercoaster turns to burn altitude to get back to the ground

this is an irishman that went with us and also a random 87 year old man that jumped with him. what a badass!

What's up Richard? Well the big board made it back from TUBE CITY with 3 man-sized caverns. BRO#1 and I agreed that next time we need even bigger boards. 7'6"-8'0" plus! I surfed a 9' Rawson Pipe Gun at massive TUBE CITY and got one wave. Also charged down to the legendary TEMPE ARIZONA WAVE TANK with Jenson Hasset (google him) and one of his bros who are both big wave hellmen who have lived on the North Shore for a while. Surfed huge 12' Hawaiian (they were saying) open ocean WAVE TANK on the 9'0" and caught one wave in 6 hours. They each caught 3 waves. Once BRO#1 and BRO#2 arrived we caught like 6 days in a row of double overhead plus TUBE CITY. BRO#2 only paddled out one or two days there. He said it was too big. The hurricane really messed things up. Short period wind swell and some wind associated with it. We only caught CHANDLER'S POINT "good" one evening. BURKHEARTS was so so. Surfed the big right on the hurricane swell that was long and fun. Surfed the left on a good decreasing swell but was too spaced out and not breaking right. Def. scored more on the CHANDLER'S POINT and BURKHEARTS last year. Surfed COW PATTIES pretty good. Surfed TROMBONES a few times (not a good wave - you basically have a good drop and maybe a turn and then just do cutbacks, not a real point more like going straight. hard to explain). SALSA POINT is where all the alex knost wannabe s and serious kooks go. Decent wave though but a little soft for my taste. Noone was really down there thats for sure. ALEX RODGERS paddled at TUBE CITY even after the onshore wind (one session after I broke my leash and struggled immensly (don't wanna say almost drowned), he did the same came in, got his board, and immediately paddled back out with no leash... he continued to loose his board and go straight back out 2 or 3 times - mad man!)

I broked my leash string after getting caught inside by a set after paddling back out after a wave. had to bail my board and pop - leash string. took 3 or 4 on the head then paddled outside. treaded water for 30-45 minutes deciding on what to do. i got 3/4 of the way to the river and decided to charge in after a set. got halfway and heard a ski take off. shit, that means there is a set. got caught in the impact zone for 6-8 waves and couldn't get in or out, foam is impossible to float it. i heard that the guys try to get rolled by waves to get pushed in. tried that and it worked. more foam and struggling then made it to wear i could stand. good experience to have that under my belt. felt pretty confident after that.

i took me 5 stops today to get some 600 grit paper. 400 no problem 800 we got it but 600 what do you need that for? wet sanded the gloss coat on the balsa skin fish to 800 and it has an amazing satin finish right now. debating on whether to leave it or to give it that wet look and polish her up.........

i got to see this tonight at the premiere and the thomas bros did an amazing job - really cool feel to the movie and some great waves and some really amazing surfing!!!

here is a bamboo perimeter stringer kite/surf board i am working on - out of the bag for a flashing trim and on to the laminating rack next.....you can see the shadow of a carbon fiber strip between the feet underneath the bamboo!

My friends, family are fine.

Actually, the damage still has been expanding due to big Tsunami and explosion of atomic energy tank...TV news said that some people were already exposed to radiation...It's pity...horrible...

Earthquakes has been occurring at random...

So we have to keep track of the situation and be ready for evacuation.

Good Surf Story from Fiji

A friend sent me this pic and story the other day - very entertaining - thought I would share:

Anyway here's a little surfing tale from the islands of Fiji. Hope that you're getting some waves for the winter!

The other weekend I journeyed out to the west to hit up Cloudbreak. I'd checked the charts and for a week out had it pegged as being a bunch of swell and good winds. As i was driving into the village to where to boat dudes live I could see some whitewash pop up above the horizon line! When I spoke to one of the boat drivers on the phone he called it 10 foot! All morning I'd been pumping myself up to hit big Cloudbreak - the forecast was saying 6-8 and I was psyching myself to take it on. 10 foot - maybe too much. I sorted out my boat and had to wait around for some other dude to rock up. I knew Cloudbreak was big but apparently no one was out. That put me off. My other dude rocks up and we decide against Cloudbreak. I'm too unfit to hit that by myself and if no one else was on it then I'm thinking it must also be hitting the reef a bit awkward.

So we hit up Restaurants which is an awesome wave. It was a nice 4 foot and it just rifles down the line. I jump off the boat paddle around and on my first wave luck into a nice set. Get about a 5-6 second barrel before it finally outruns me. I'm stoked, this is going to be awesome but then tragedy strikes. I see a figure in the line-up. "He looks familiar" I think. He turns and then I realise: TRENT MUNRO!!! I can't believe it! Of all the places to be and of all the days and of all the breaks. Man I hate that guy. He used to be a pro and grew up near me. He was always a jerk and so was his dad, just real arrogant. The last time I surfed with him was before I came to Fiji the first time and it ended in me telling him to "get f*cked". He was ripping it up at Restaurants too. Jerk. I end up over hearing from Munro that they'd hit up Cloudbreak that morning and some dudes ended up getting cleaned up big time and wound up holding onto the pylons of the judging tower screaming for help!

After the wind got into Restaurants we hit up Wilkes. It's just me and the other boat dude. I get my first wave, eat it and then get caught inside by the wide swinging sets. By the time I make it back out the same thing happens to my surf mate. He gets cleaned up big time. Stops duck-diving waves and just goes under them. I work out where to sit and manage to snavel a few solid 6-foot barrels. It's a big closey but just nice to travel down some big lumps. Old mate I'm surfing with doesn't catch another one.

We then head over to Swimmingpools. It's 3, maybe 4 on the biggest and fun. It's a surfers dream. Easy take off to barrel with a section for turns. I'm out there for about an hour before I'm cramping and have to bail. Good times though despite ending up with really badly burnt hands.

ps. here's a pic of swimmingpools, it's the only time I managed to get my camera out. It actually has a much bigger wall than what the image looks like, the wave wraps away from the boat for about another 50m.
